Rawalpindi: A mother in Pakistan’s Rawalpindi had a shock of her life seeing her missing son begging on a street.
Shaheen Akhtar lodged a missing person report with the Civil Lines police after son Mustakeem Khalid disappeared six years ago in 2016, NDTV reported citing Dawn.
Mustakeem, a former policeman, was suffering from a mental disorder due to the effects of typhoid fever, according to the report.
Close to seven years later, Shaheen Akhtar spotted him begging with a gang at Tahli Mohri Chowk on Tuesday.
In her missing report, the mother explained when her son left home in 2016, unlike he had previously done and villagers used to bring him back, he did not come back.
Upon his mother identifying him on the street, the police arrested four members of the beggars' gang, including three women, Dawn reported.
When she met him on the street begging, Shaheen Akhtar, who had long been oblivious of her son’s details, couldn’t believe her eyes.
When she embraced him, the gang members began assaulting and abusing her.
The gang, comprising three women and two men, had subjected him to torture and injections, alongside exploiting his disability.
Police are on the lookout for remaining members of the gang.
