Gaza: Hamas has officially announced the dissolution of its Governmental Emergency Committee, ending the governing body that had administered Gaza for more than two decades. The move is being presented as a major political step aimed at helping end Israel's continuing military offensive, which is widely viewed as a genocide, and paving the way for a new administrative structure.
A new technocratic body, the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, will assume responsibility for governing the territory. Hamas has controlled Gaza since 2007, after winning the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections and has repeatedly indicated since the ceasefire agreement with Israel last October that it was prepared to relinquish administrative responsibilities.
Ismail Al Thawabta, head of the Hamas-run Government Media Office, confirmed that Governmental Emergency Committee chief Mohammed Al Farra had formally submitted his resignation. The transition is being overseen by the "Board of Peace," an initiative reportedly established in October 2025 with the backing of US President Donald Trump.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the decision was intended to remove what the group described as Israel's justification for continuing its offensive and affirmed that Hamas would fully support the new administration in carrying out its responsibilities.
Despite the political transition, Hamas said Gaza's security structure would remain intact. Al Thawabta told Al Jazeera that all Interior Ministry personnel would continue in their existing roles to prevent any security vacuum during the transfer of administrative authority.
The leadership change comes as Gaza remains devastated by war, widespread destruction and severe humanitarian hardship, with expectations that the technocratic administration will focus on governance and civilian recovery amid the ongoing crisis.
