Saudi pushes Gaza child protection at UN, urges instant global action

Saudi Arabia has intensified its intervention at the United Nations over the situation in Gaza, highlighting what it described as serious violations affecting children amid the ongoing conflict. The Kingdom stressed that protecting children in armed conflicts is a collective responsibility of the international community and called for urgent and coordinated global action to prevent further humanitarian deterioration.

At a United Nations Security Council session on “Children and Armed Conflict,” Saudi representatives strongly raised concerns about the worsening conditions faced by children in Gaza. The situation was described as a grave breach of international humanitarian law and basic human values. Saudi Arabia urged immediate international steps to protect civilians, particularly children, and emphasised that addressing the root causes of such crises is essential for long-term stability.

UN Charter Principles and International Order

Saudi Arabia also used the occasion to underline the importance of upholding the United Nations Charter on its 80th anniversary. It stressed that respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs must remain central principles of the international system. The Kingdom argued that consistent and fair application of UN Charter principles across all countries is necessary to maintain credibility in the global order and strengthen multilateral cooperation in the face of growing global challenges.

Sudan Crisis and Push for Political Solution

On the situation in Sudan, Saudi Arabia reiterated its position at the UN Security Council, calling for urgent measures to restore stability in the country. It emphasised the need for an immediate ceasefire and the protection of Sudan’s territorial integrity and state institutions. Rejecting military solutions, Saudi Arabia maintained that only a political settlement can resolve the conflict. It linked the worsening humanitarian situation to ongoing fighting and failures in implementing past agreements and UN resolutions, while expressing support for renewed dialogue under the Jeddah framework and continued humanitarian assistance to the Sudanese population.
