Eight killed, several injured after gunman opens fire on Russian university

Moscow: At least eight people have been confirmed killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire in a building at Russia's Perm State University, authorities said. They added that the offender is a student and has been detained.

The Russian Investigative Committee reported to news agency TASS that eight individuals had died and several more were injured as a result of the incident.

"A student opened fire on the territory of one of the buildings of the Perm State University. The information on the dead and injured are being specified. The suspect's identity has been established. He is detained," said Svetlana Petrenko, an official representative of the Investigative Committee, as reported by TASS News Agency.

According to the Committee's findings, the suspect was injured while attempting to elude capture. The suspect is being investigated for the murder of two or more persons, and a criminal complaint has been filed against him.

Perm State University, situated about 1,300 kilometres east of Moscow is one of the Urals' oldest institutions of higher learning.
