6 children among those stuck in cable car 900 feet above a Pak valley

Islamabad: Eight people including six children are waiting for help as they are suspended inside a cable car over a deep valley in Pakistan.

The children were crossing the valley to go to school in the chairlift when a cable snapped at the height of about 365 metres, news agency AFP reported.

One man, stuck in the cable car, told a local TV channel by phone ‘ For God’s sake help us’ as he waited for help in the mountainous part of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The man confirmed that there are eight people on onboard who have been stuck for hours in mid-air.

The report further said that one man in the cable car was fainted even as a helicopter came and left without conducting rescue operations.

When the accident took place around 7:00 in the morning, residents appealed to officials in the neighourhood using mosque loudspeakers.

A senior official told AFP that the cable car was dangling on a single rope carrying eight occupants mostly school children.

More than four hours after the accident a Pakistani Army helicopter came on the scene, according to the report.

An official with Pakistan's 1122 rescue service said it is impossible to help the people without a helicopter.

Cable cars are in use in the area to connect remote villages and towns across huge mountains.

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Agency said people are stuck at a height of at least 900 feet, while a provincial official put the height at 1,000 to 1,200 feet.
