India Ranks 131 on global internet speeds

Ookla Speed Test Global Index ranked India 131st of 138 countries in terms of mobile data speed and 70th out of 175 countries in the index for fixed broadband speed in September 2020.

The average mobile download speed in India for September is 12.07Mbps, while the global average is 35.25Mbps. This is a significant reduction in data speed and compared to the previous months, India has suffered a drop of two points.

According to the Index, India's neighbouring countries like Nepal, China, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have a higher mobile data speed. South Korea ranks the highest among 138 countries with an average speed of 121Mbps.

In terms of fixed broadband speed, the index put India at the 70th position since the country gained two points with an average download speed of 46.47Mbps; well above its neighbouring countries. Singapore tops the list of 175 countries with a broadband speed of 226.60Mbps.

The global average of mobile upload speed is 11.22Mbps and average latency is 42ms, while India's average upload speed is 4.31 Mbps and latency is 52ms. The Speed Test Global Index studies and compares the internet speed data of various countries every month. Though India ranks as one among the lowest in average internet speed, it does fairly well in fixed broadband speed.
