Buenos Aires: Lionel Messi ended his international career in spectacular fashion, scoring once and setting up two goals as Argentina defeated Benin 3–0 in an emotional farewell match in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old played his final match for Argentina on October 7, bringing the curtain down on a 21-year international career. He made his final appearance in the iconic blue-and-white jersey as the packed stadium gave its captain an emotional send-off.
After a goalless first half, Messi provided Argentina’s breakthrough in the 48th minute. His precise delivery found Nicolás Otamendi, who finished to put the hosts ahead.
Messi then produced another moment of brilliance to set up Nico Paz, whose curling effort doubled Argentina’s lead. The Argentine captain completed the scoring from the penalty spot, adding the third goal and giving himself the perfect farewell.
