Mbappe, Haaland shatter Messi’s Champions League records

Football: Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland rewrote Lionel Messi’s Champions League record books on a remarkable night, setting new milestones despite contrasting fortunes for their teams, according to reports.

Real Madrid forward Mbappe became the youngest player to reach 100 Champions League appearances, achieving the milestone at 27 years and 298 days. He surpassed Messi, who reached the mark at 28 years and 84 days. Coincidentally, both players made their 100th appearances against Roma.

Mbappe marked the occasion with an equaliser against Roma, taking his Champions League tally to 72 goals. He moved into fifth place on the competition’s all-time scoring list, overtaking Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez. Madrid completed a stunning comeback from 3-1 down to secure a 4-3 victory.

Manchester City striker Haaland also broke Messi’s record by becoming the fastest player to score 60 Champions League goals, reaching the milestone in just 60 appearances. At 26 years and 85 days, he also became the youngest to achieve the feat, beating Messi’s age record by a single day.

Haaland scored twice against Paris Saint-Germain, taking his tally to 61 goals in 60 appearances. However, his individual achievement could not prevent City from suffering a 4-2 defeat.

The double record-breaking performance has intensified the spotlight on the two prolific forwards, as both surpassed long-standing Champions League benchmarks set by Messi on the same night.
