Sanjiv Bhatt taken into custody

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat Police on Wednesday detained for questioning former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt here in a case relating to falsely framing a lawyer in a criminal case in 1998.

The Gujarat CID, which took Bhatt into custody following directives from the Gujarat High Court, also detained six other people, including two former police officers.

Sources said they were all being questioned and might subsequently be arrested.

When Bhatt was serving as the Superintendent of Police in Banaskantha, in North Gujarat, he was accused of trying to frame a lawyer in a fake case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Sanjiv Bhatt is known for his role in filing an affidavit in the Supreme Court of India against Narendra Modi, the then chief minister of Gujarat, concerning the latter's role in the 2002 Gujarat riots. In 2015, Bhatt was removed from the police service, on the ground of "unauthorised absence".

He is also known for sharp criticism against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in social media platforms.  In a tweet on early morning of Teacher's day, Bhatt  said: today is 5th September - Teacher's Day. Hope one Delhi University or Gujarat University teacher identifies Narendra Modi as his student. Just ONE!
