Ilaiyaraja firm against performing his songs without authorization

Chennai: Veteran composer Ilaiyaraja on Wednesday reiterated his stand against unauthorised use of his song in concerts.

Talking to The Hindu, the composer appealed to musicians not to perform his songs without permission.

Performing his songs illegally would prompt him to take legal action against those who do so, he said.

He said that the south India Film Musicians Association would collect royalty and, “The singers will also be included in this association” The Hindu quoted him as saying.

Raja also stressed that he was not against musicians singing his works.

However, singers perform his song for free are not required to pay royalty. “ If you take money to sing my song for a concert, don’t I deserve a small part from that money”? He asked.

In so doing he hopes to formalise concept of royalties in the future.
