Riyadh announces SR8bn road expansion with six major projects

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City has launched the third phase of the Ring Roads and Main Roads Development Program, covering six road projects valued at more than SR8 billion.

The phase focuses on improving traffic movement across Riyadh and strengthening links between key districts and external routes. The projects extend over more than 60 kilometres and include the construction of 12 bridges, 17 intersections and six tunnels.

Several developments target heavily used corridors in the north and east of the capital. Uthman bin Affan Road will be expanded with seven bridges and additional lanes, increasing capacity to 500,000 vehicles per day. King Abdulaziz Road will be redeveloped over 4.7 kilometres with four bridges and one tunnel, raising daily capacity to 450,000 vehicles.

Thumamah Road will also be upgraded with three bridges and three tunnels to improve connectivity between northern and eastern areas.

As part of engineering modifications for congested locations, eight sites across Riyadh will be redesigned to improve intersection efficiency and increase average capacity by 40 to 60 per cent.

The phase also includes upgrades to major roads linking Riyadh with other cities. Jeddah Road will be developed over 29 kilometres with 14 bridges to accommodate up to 353,000 vehicles per day. Taif Road will be upgraded over 15 kilometres with four bridges and two tunnels, supporting traffic volumes of up to 200,000 vehicles daily.

Implementation is scheduled over three to four years. The Ring Roads and Main Roads Development Program was launched in 2020, with earlier phases announced in 2024 and 2025.
