Jeddah: Saudi Arabia has introduced smart golf carts at the Grand Mosque in Mecca. These innovative carts are aimed at facilitating the tawaaf (circumambulation) around the holy Kaaba, particularly benefiting the elderly and those with disabilities during the peak Umrah season.
The initiative, which commenced during Ramadan on March 11, offers a practical solution for individuals with special needs or physical challenges to engage more comfortably in the spiritual experience of Umrah. With the smart golf carts, pilgrims can now navigate the mosque's rooftop, accessible from Ajyad Escalator, King Abdulaziz Gate Escalators and Bab Al Umrah Escalators, between 4:00 PM and 4:00 AM.
Each cart is capable of accommodating up to 10 passengers, with a total of 50 vehicles available for pilgrims, priced at 25 riyals per person, tax included.
"The introduction of smart golf carts at the Grand Mosque is a significant step towards inclusivity and accessibility for all pilgrims, especially during the busy Umrah season," stated a spokesperson for the initiative.
Social media platforms have already witnessed footage showcasing these carts in action, ferrying pilgrims as they perform the sacred ritual on a specially designated floor of the Grand Mosque.
This move aligns with the Kingdom's ongoing efforts to enhance the overall experience for Muslims undertaking the Umrah pilgrimage.
"The concept of employing smart golf carts for this purpose has been under consideration since 2014, following directives from the late King Abdullah," revealed sources familiar with the matter.
