12 Indians among 13 dead in Qatar gas plant blast

Doha: In the deadly explosion at the Ras Laffan gas complex here in Qatar that claimed 13 lives, 12 of the victims were Indian nationals, according to confirmation from the Indian Embassy in Doha, Business Today reported.

The Embassy confirmed the deaths on Tuesday and said it was coordinating with Qatari authorities to assist the affected families. It expressed condolences via X post.

“We convey our deepest condolences to the families of those who have unfortunately passed away in the sad incident at Ras Laffan Industrial City last night,” the embassy said in a post on X.

“Our embassy is working in close contact with the Qatari authorities to extend all possible assistance to the Indian nationals and their families affected by this incident, including ensuring that the mortal remains of the deceased are repatriated to India at the earliest,” it wrote.

Another 66 people were injured in the incident, though officials said none of them was in critical condition.

Qatari authorities have launched an investigation into the explosion, which occurred at the Barzan gas facility within Ras Laffan Industrial City, the country's main energy production and export hub. Officials have described the incident as an industrial accident and ruled out sabotage or any hostile action.

The facility had only recently resumed operations after remaining shut since December 2025 for urgent maintenance work. Energy officials indicated that production had restarted just two days before the explosion, with investigators expected to examine whether the restart process contributed to the accident.

The blast occurred at a site that was already recovering from damage linked to the US-Iran conflict earlier this year. Iranian missile strikes in March hit key gas-processing infrastructure at Ras Laffan, reducing Qatar's liquefied natural gas export capacity and disrupting operations across the energy sector. Thousands of workers were evacuated during the crisis, while the closure of the Strait of Hormuz temporarily affected a significant share of global LNG supplies.

Despite the latest accident, Qatari authorities said the explosion has not affected the country's wider LNG exports or created any environmental threat. The Barzan facility remains an important supplier of natural gas for domestic power generation, industry and export markets.
