Mohanlal’s mother Santhakumari passes away at 90

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal’s mother, Santhakumari, has passed away at the age of 90. She died at her residence in Elamakkara in Ernakulam district on Tuesday, December 30. Mohanlal, who was in Kochi at the time, rushed to her home after being informed of her death.

Santhakumari was originally from Elanthoor village in Pathanamthitta district and later moved to Thiruvananthapuram with her family following her husband Viswanathan Nair’s government service.

Nair, who passed away earlier, had served as the law secretary to the Kerala government. For many years, she lived at the family home, “Hill View,” on Kesavadev Road in Mudavanmugal, Thiruvananthapuram. She was later brought to Ernakulam by Mohanlal after she reportedly suffered a stroke, Indian Express reported.

Mohanlal was known to share a close and affectionate relationship with his mother and frequently spoke about her with fondness. After receiving the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, he had made it a point to meet her immediately upon returning to Kochi. On Mother’s Day earlier this year, he had also shared a throwback photograph of the two of them.

The actor has often recalled that his mother found it emotionally difficult to watch scenes in which he was beaten by villains on screen, despite understanding that they were part of a film. He had also spoken about how she was particularly disturbed during the early phase of his career when he played negative roles.

Malayalam megastar Mammootty, accompanied by his wife Sulfath, visited Santhakumari’s residence in Elamakkara soon after the news broke to pay their respects. Santhakumari’s mortal remains are expected to be taken to Thiruvananthapuram, where her funeral is likely to be held on December 31.

Mohanlal is the younger of the two children born to Santhakumari and Viswanathan Nair. The couple had lost their elder son, Pyarelal, in 2000.

On the professional front, Mohanlal was most recently seen in the epic fantasy action drama Vrusshabha. He is married to Suchitra, the daughter of veteran producer K Balaji, and the couple have two children, Pranav and Vismaya.
