Brutality on differently abled: 4 SFI members booked in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: The Cantonment Police in Kerala’s capital booked four students associated with the CPI(M)’s students’ wing, Students Federation of India (SFI), for assaulting a differently able student. The victim, identified as Muhammad Anas, was subjected to body shaming and humiliation in front of other students, The Times of India reported.

A 19-year-old BA Islamic student, Anas, is also an SFI sympathiser, and it was based on his complaint the accused were booked. Anas alleged that he was asked to climb a wall to place flags during a college function, and when he said he could not, expressing his inability, the SFI workers assaulted him, he said.

The accused were third-year philosophy students Amal Chand, Midhun, and Alan Jamal, as well as second-year PG Zoology student Vidhu Udaya. All of them, who dragged the complainant to the union room and assaulted him there, are on the run. The accused kicked Anas on the legs and hit him on the head with wooden pieces. They went on with their assault when he warned them that he would move legally against the torture. Anas was previously injured and was admitted to the general hospital, as TOI reported.

Anas said that it was the fifth time he had been assaulted in front of other students, and it was the first time he was physically assaulted. The accused demanded Anas's reason for disobeying them and claimed that they saw him doing the task he was asked to do at his village for the party.

Booking the four, the police registered a case under sections 92 (a) and 92 (b) of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act-2016 and sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 296 (b) for abusing, 115 (2) for voluntarily causing hurt, 118 (1) for causing hurt using a dangerous weapon or means, 126 (2) for wrongful restraint, and 351 (2) for criminal intimidation.
