Toll from Taiwan quake rises to 17

Taipei: The toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Taiwan reached 17 by Sunday, according to the local fire agency.

Previous reports said 462 people were injured due to Saturday's quake. Over 350 people have been rescued in Tainan city. The rescue was still underway.

The 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit Kaohsiung city at a depth of 15 km at 3.57 a.m. (Beijing Time), Xinhua cited China Earthquake Networks Centre as saying.

Local monitoring authorities put the scale of the quake at 6.4 magnitude.

In the historic city of Tainan, which bore the brunt of the quake, eight buildings collapsed and five others were partially damaged.
