Malaysia top court upholds Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy conviction

Kuala Lumpur: A top court Tuesday upheld the conviction of Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia's leader of opposition, of sodomising his former aide.

Anwar, 67, was sentenced to five years' jail March 7 2014 by the Court of Appeal for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari, 30, June 26, 2008, overturning an acquittal by the Kuala Lumpur High Court Jan 9, 2012, Xinhua reported.

In his appeal, Anwar asked the Federal Court to set aside the conviction and sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal.

A five-member Federal Court bench upheld the Court of Appeal verdict.

Sodomy is illegal in Muslim-majority Malaysia, but very few people are prosecuted.
