Mumbai: Veteran actor Bharat Kapoor, best known for his supporting and negative roles in films such as Hindustan Ki Kasam, Sone Pe Suhaaga, and Balidaan, passed away on Monday afternoon at the age of 80 due to cardiac arrest, his close friend and actor Avatar Gill said.
“I got a call from Bharat ji’s son Rahul saying that his father passed away around 3:00 pm due to cardiac arrest at his residence. He had been unwell for the past three days,” Gill told PTI.
Remembering his long association with the actor, Gill said, “I have known him for more than 50 years. We did many plays and acted in films together. We were constantly in touch, but for a week we had not spoken. For me, it is like losing an elder brother, a mentor, and a friend.”
Bharat Kapoor was widely recognised for his negative roles in films including Barsaat, Aakhree Raasta, Noorie, Ram Balram, and Inkaar, among others.
His last rites were performed on Monday evening at 6:00 pm at a crematorium near Sion Hospital. The chautha ceremony will be held on April 30 at the North Bombay Association.
According to Gill, family members and close friends from the film industry, including Rakesh Bedi, director Ramesh Talvar, and several theatre artists, paid their final respects.
Kapoor is survived by his wife Lopa and sons Rahul and Sagar. His daughter Kavita passed away a few years ago.
