Actor Aamir Khan has responded to criticism on social media following his recent marriage to Gauri Spratt, after some users accused him of promoting "love jihad" by claiming that all three of his wives were Hindus.
In an interview with Rediff, Aamir rejected the allegation and clarified that Gauri is Christian, not Hindu. He also said that none of his wives had converted their religion, as all of his marriages were civil marriages.
The actor said his family had always been inclusive, noting that both his sisters are married to Hindus, his daughter is married to a Hindu, and his cousin Mansoor is married to a Christian. He added that neither Gauri, Kiran Rao nor Reena Dutta had changed their faith, and described the controversy as increasingly comical, Indian Express reported.
Aamir also addressed reports claiming that he had purchased additional apartments worth around Rs 100 crore in Mumbai's Marina Apartments, which is undergoing redevelopment. Media reports had suggested that he planned to create a large family complex where he, Gauri, his former wives, children and other relatives would live.
Dismissing the speculation, Aamir said the redevelopment was a collective decision taken by the housing society and not a personal project. He explained that the building's redevelopment involved a builder who owned a majority of the property, while he was only one of the society's 24 members.
The reports had claimed that Aamir already owned more than nine flats in the complex and intended to allocate separate floors for himself and Gauri, his son Junaid Khan, Kiran Rao and their son Azad, as well as his mother and sisters. However, Aamir indicated that much of the speculation surrounding the redevelopment had been exaggerated.
Aamir was first married to Reena Dutta, with whom he has two children, Junaid and Ira Khan. The couple divorced after 16 years of marriage. He married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, and although they separated in 2021, they continue to co-parent their son, Azad. He recently married Bengaluru-based Gauri Spratt, whom he had introduced to the media around his 60th birthday last year.
