UP: Sambhal school principal, teacher booked for ‘promoting religious activities’

Sambhal: Police booked the principal and an assistant teacher of a PM Shri school in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal for allegedly promoting religious activities, hurting sentiments, and fostering intolerance on campus, officials said Sunday.

Principal Mohammad Anjar Ahmad and assistant teacher Mohammad Gul Ejaz at PM Shri Vidyalaya, Jalab Sarai, were suspended after videos surfaced online showing students in hijabs and skullcaps reciting religious verses. Acting headmaster Valesh Kumar faced suspension too for failing to intervene.

District Magistrate Ankit Khandelwal told PTI a three-member probe committee under the chief development officer is investigating. The issue emerged post-online posts, prompting a block education officer’s surprise check and student interactions.

Allegations include religious instructions, disparaging other faiths, disrupting official duties, and breaching the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act 2009, Constitution’s Article 28, and UP Government Servants Conduct Rules 1956.

An FIR was lodged at Nakhasa police station against Ahmad and Ejaz; further action awaits the inquiry’s findings.
