UP: Hindu students form human chain helping Muslim pals perform Namaz

Lucknow: The administration of the University of Lucknow locked and barricaded the main gate of the Lal Baradari complex on campus, triggering protests by students who alleged a lack of prior notice, according to a Muslim Mirror report.

The Lal Baradari, an ASI-protected monument built around 1800 by Nasiruddin Haider, houses a mosque where Muslim students regularly offer prayers, particularly during Ramzan.

Students said they found the entrance sealed without advance information. With access restricted, several Muslim students offered namaz outside the barricaded gate. Hindu students affiliated with groups including Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha (SCS), NSUI and AISA formed a human chain behind them during the prayers.

Protesting students alleged that the move could lead to permanent restrictions on access to the mosque amid ongoing fencing and security work at the heritage site. Some students removed barricades and gathered in large numbers, demanding the reopening of the gate and clarity from the administration.

Police were deployed on campus to maintain order. After discussions between university officials and student representatives, the situation was brought under control without major escalation.

The university administration said the gate was closed as part of measures to protect the dilapidated structure and facilitate security arrangements. Students, however, questioned the absence of consultation before the action was taken.

Further discussions between stakeholders are expected.
