Indore: The Indore police have arrested a 23-year-old man on a complaint from a woman who was in a relationship with him on charges of rape, coercing her to convert her religion.
The police say that the woman lodged an FIR against the man, reportedly following an altercation between them, which was allegedly inspired by the controversial film 'The Kerala Story'
Dinesh Verma, the in-charge of Khajrana police station, informed reporters that the man was apprehended under the provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Freedom of Religion Act 2021, which prohibits forced conversions or deceitful methods, along with the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Verma cited the FIR, stating that the complainant had been living with the man "after being lured into a love affair with the promise of marriage." She claimed that the man had been pressuring her to change her religion and subjecting her to mental harassment.
"The woman stated that she and the man recently watched 'The Kerala Story.' After the film, they had an argument, and the man assaulted her before leaving her. She approached the police on May 19 and filed an FIR," explained the police officer.
The accused man, who has completed his education up to class 12, is currently unemployed, while the victim woman is highly educated and employed in a private company, he added. They had initially met four years ago while studying at a coaching institute.
Verma reassured that all the allegations are being thoroughly investigated.
