Alwar: A vegetable vendor in Rajasthan, who got beaten up by a mob, allegedly suspecting him as a thief, succumbed to his injuries while in treatment, PTI reported citing police's statement.
Chiranji Saini, the 54-year-old man, was beaten by the mob on Monday in Rambas village of Alwar district under Govindgarh police station limits. He was going home from a farm when he was attacked by a crowd of more than a dozen people.
But the tractor owner mistook Saini for the thief, and he and his associates started the beating. Police rushed to the spot, took the injured Saini to hospital and gave him first aid. Later he was referred to Jaipur hospital, where he died from his injuries.
There were huge protests from people since the accused belonged to a particular community.
Chiranji made a livelihood out of his vegetable cart. After his unfortunate death, people gheraoed the police station and demanded the arrest of those who thrashed him. They also demanded compensation for his family.
Later, Saini's son lodged a case in Govindgarh police station, accusing the tractor owner and others of killing his father.
However, the police have refrained from providing more details. SHO Deputy Assistant Inspector Shyam Lal Meena confirmed that Chiranji Saini lost his life after being badly thrashed and said the police had registered a case.
The official said, "A case of the tractor theft was registered in the police station area of Sadar, and they have recovered the vehicle from the Rambagh area."
