New Delhi: Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday accused the Lok Sabha of being run in an "undemocratic manner," claiming that he was repeatedly denied the opportunity to speak.
His remarks followed an intervention by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, who urged him to adhere to the House's procedural rules meant to uphold its dignity. The exact reason behind the Speaker’s observation was not immediately clear.
Gandhi alleged that the Speaker made remarks about him and then adjourned the House without granting him a chance to respond. He further claimed that he had been consistently denied the opportunity to speak over the past week.
Later, around 70 Congress Lok Sabha MPs, including Deputy Leader of the House Gaurav Gogoi, party General Secretary KC Venugopal, and party Whip Manickam Tagore, met the Speaker to formally raise concerns over the alleged denial of speaking time to Gandhi, party sources said.
