Air pollution has emerged as a major challenge in India, particularly in the northern regions. In megacities such as Delhi, Ghaziabad and Noida, access to clean air has become a luxury. These cities are recording hazardous Air Quality Index (AQI) levels.
On the AQI scale, a reading below 50 falls under the best category. However, several north Indian cities have crossed this limit, with AQI levels touching around 400. In view of the worsening conditions, doctors are advising people to stay indoors or temporarily leave these cities.
Against this backdrop, a list of 10 places in India where people can enjoy clean air has been released. Most of these locations record AQI levels below 50, indicating healthier living conditions and a better quality of life.
Munnar in Kerala has found a place on the list, with a real-time AQI of 47. A picturesque hill station known for its tea plantations and mist-covered hills, Munnar has limited industrial activity, which contributes to its low pollution levels. The AQI here remains below 50 throughout the year.
Coorg (Kodagu) in Karnataka, known as the coffee capital of India, has a real-time AQI of 49. The absence of heavy industries and traffic congestion helps keep pollution levels exceptionally low in the region.
Aizawl in Mizoram has a real-time AQI of 48. The capital city, located amid pine-covered hills, has minimal vehicular traffic. Natural advantages ensure clean air throughout the year, keeping AQI levels consistently in the best category.
Coonoor in Tamil Nadu, with a real-time AQI of 48, is a serene town in the Nilgiri hills. Its lush greenery, tea estates, cool climate and altitude contribute to good air quality, with AQI values often staying below 50.
Shillong in Meghalaya, also recording a real-time AQI of 47, is popularly known as the Scotland of the East. Frequent rainfall and favourable climatic conditions help keep pollution levels low. The city is a major attraction for nature lovers.
Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh has an AQI of 49. The remote region, characterised by snow-clad mountains, apple orchards and low population density, is among the least polluted areas in the country.
Gokarna in Karnataka, with a real-time AQI of 49, is a scenic coastal town. Sea breezes play a crucial role in maintaining air quality, while limited traffic and the inflow of clean marine air help keep pollution levels low.
