Karnataka orders private hospitals to report pregnant minors under POCSO

Bengaluru: Private hospitals in Karnataka must immediately report pregnancies in girls under 18 to police or child helplines, as per new state guidelines under the POCSO Act, 2012.

The Health and Family Welfare Services directive deems such cases serious offenses mandating disclosure under Section 19(1), overriding CrPC rules. Upon admission, doctors must alert the Special Juvenile Police Unit, local station, or Child Helpline 1098.

Non-reporting risks up to one year in jail and fines for doctors, hospitals, or managers failing to report subordinates' cases. Hospitals must maintain detailed POCSO records, preserve medical documents legally, uphold patient confidentiality, and assist investigators. All staff require POCSO training.

The rules apply instantly, with legal action for violations.
