Incidents of violence instigated by Hindu groups during functions leading to the consecration of the Ram temples in Ayodhya were reported in many places in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, but the situation still remains tense in Mira Road of Thane district even after the temple ceremonies.
The incident, which occurred a day after the temple inauguration, has highlighted simmering religious animosities in the region.
The violence began with an attack on a 22-year-old commerce student, Mohammad Tariq, and two of his companions as they were transporting goods through the Shanti Nagar neighbourhood. The assailants, identified as members of a Hindutva mob, targeted the trio solely based on their Muslim identity, as indicated by the name and stickers on their vehicles.
Eyewitnesses reported that the mob demanded the victims chant "Jai Shri Ram" before subjecting them to brutal assault with weapons including sticks, belts, and sharp objects, according to a report published on scroll.in.
Tariq, who was driving the vehicle, bore the brunt of the attack, sustaining severe injuries to his head, back, and hands. His companions, Mehraj Shah, 21, and Deen Ali Shaikh, 45, were also injured in the assault.
The violence in Mira Road is not an isolated incident but rather the culmination of escalating tensions in the area leading up to the Ram temple inauguration. Communal friction had been brewing for days, with rallies and processions by both Hindu and Muslim communities adding fuel to the fire.
On the eve of the temple inauguration, a procession of cars and bikes chanting "Jai Shri Ram" was attacked in a Muslim neighbourhood in Mira Road, signalling the beginning of the unrest. Subsequent incidents, including the demolition of Muslim-owned shops by municipal authorities and retaliatory attacks by Hindutva mobs, exacerbated the volatile situation.
The violence reached its peak when Hindutva supporters conducted several small rallies, targeting Muslim-owned businesses, vehicles, and properties. Videos of mobs assaulting Muslims and vandalizing their possessions have circulated widely on social media platforms, sparking outrage and condemnation.
In response to the escalating violence, local authorities have taken some measures, including arrests and demolitions of allegedly illegal structures. However, critics argue that these actions are inadequate and fail to address the root causes of the unrest.
