India pledges funds to build 14 schools in Nepal earthquake-hit areas

India has pledged Nepali Rupees 560.2 million for the construction of 14 schools in earthquake-affected districts of Nepal, reaffirming its support for the country’s post-disaster reconstruction efforts.

According to a statement issued by the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu on Wednesday, the Central Level Project Implementation Unit-Education under Nepal’s Ministry of Education and Sports signed agreements for the construction of the schools under a Government of India grant.

The schools will be built across eight districts, including Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Dolakha, Kathmandu, Kavrepalanchowk, Ramechhap, and Sindhupalchok. These districts were among the worst affected by earthquakes in Nepal over the past several years.

Nepal experienced its deadliest earthquake in 2015, in which nearly 9,000 people were killed.

The new schools will be constructed according to the Nepal government norms for earthquake-resilient infrastructure. The facilities will include academic blocks, furnished classrooms, and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls.

India has previously supported similar reconstruction projects in Nepal. In January 2024, 70 schools across eight districts and the Tribhuvan University Central Library in Kathmandu were completed and handed over to the Nepal government under India’s post-earthquake reconstruction grant.

The Indian government said it remains committed to working with Nepal and its agencies on socio-economic development projects, including reconstruction efforts in earthquake-affected areas.
