Indian Railways has approved the introduction of the country’s first hydrogen fuel cell-based train on the Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana as part of its push for cleaner and sustainable transportation.
The 10-car trainset will be powered by a 1,200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and is expected to begin operations soon with a maximum speed of 75 kmph.
With the project, India joins countries such as Germany, Japan, China, and the United States that are exploring hydrogen-powered rail transport.
Indian Railways said the project reflects its commitment to innovation, energy efficiency, and environmentally sustainable transportation while supporting India’s clean energy and net-zero emission goals.
Hydrogen fuel cell technology generates electricity through a chemical reaction using hydrogen, with water vapour as the only emission. Unlike conventional diesel-based systems, the train will generate electricity onboard.
An indigenous hydrogen storage and refuelling facility has been set up at Jind for the pilot project. The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation has approved the facility.
Railways said trained technical staff will accompany the train during the initial phase of operations to ensure smooth functioning.
The approval includes several safety measures, including round-the-clock monitoring of the hydrogen refuelling system, deployment of trained personnel, regular inspections, and maintenance schedules.
Hydrogen leak detectors, flame detectors, and other safety sensors have also been installed at the hydrogen production, storage, and dispensing facility.
Indian Railways has already electrified nearly its entire network to reduce carbon emissions. The hydrogen train project marks another step towards cleaner transport technology.
Earlier this month, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation also launched the country’s first hydrogen-powered shuttle bus service in the Central Vista area of New Delhi.
The buses, supplied by Indian Oil Corporation Limited, have a seating capacity of 35 passengers and are equipped with GPS tracking and CCTV systems.
