Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s scheduled meeting with senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in Delhi on Thursday was postponed, sources said.
The meeting was to take place at 10 am but was deferred until late Wednesday night.
The reasons for the postponement remain unclear, and a new date is likely to be fixed next week.
The postponed meeting came a day after Vijay met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during his first visit to Delhi after becoming chief minister.
During his meeting with PM Modi, Vijay discussed several issues concerning Tamil Nadu, including the Mekedatu dam project, arrests of Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lanka, and the controversy surrounding the Tamil Thai Vazhthu invocation song during his swearing-in ceremony.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, Vijay said Tamil Nadu has consistently upheld the dignity of national symbols and pointed to the long-established place of Tamil Thai Vazhthu in the state’s public life.
He also raised concerns over Karnataka’s proposed ground-breaking ceremony for the Mekedatu balancing reservoir project across the Cauvery river, saying it violated the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal and the Supreme Court verdict. Vijay said the announcement had caused distress among farmers in Tamil Nadu.
The chief minister also said 58 Tamil Nadu fishermen are currently in Sri Lankan custody and 266 boats have been seized, with 12 instances of fishermen arrests reported this year.
In his meeting with Sitharaman, Vijay submitted a memorandum seeking priority funding for ports, highways, railway projects, and industrial corridors in Tamil Nadu. He also sought support for metro rail projects in Erode, Coimbatore, and Madurai, and requested the establishment of Institutes of National Importance in the state.
