The India Meteorological Department on Monday warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely across parts of northwest and central India during the week.
In a special heatwave bulletin, the weather department said maximum temperatures are expected to rise gradually by two to three degrees Celsius across many parts of northwest India between Monday and May 24. Temperatures over Chhattisgarh could rise by three to four degrees Celsius till May 21.
The IMD said there will be no significant change in maximum temperatures across the rest of the country till May 24.
The department added that Maharashtra and Gujarat are unlikely to see major temperature changes till May 18, after which maximum temperatures may decrease by two to three degrees Celsius between May 19 and May 24.
Heatwave conditions are likely in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, West Rajasthan, and East Rajasthan from Monday to May 24.
In Uttar Pradesh, both western and eastern regions may experience heatwave to severe heatwave conditions between Tuesday and May 24.
The IMD also forecast heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, and central Maharashtra on different days between Monday and May 24.
According to the department, isolated pockets in Bihar and Telangana could witness heatwave conditions between Monday and May 21, while coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam may experience similar conditions from May 20 to May 24.
