Hyderabad: As waste generation rises sharply across Hyderabad, a local startup is attempting to tackle the growing crisis with a model that links environmental responsibility to tangible rewards. Goodeebag, founded in 2022 by entrepreneur Abhishiek Agarwal, is positioning itself as a practical response to the city’s mounting waste management challenges, according to a report by Siasat.
The initiative was born out of a perceived gap between environmental awareness and real-world action. Its core approach focuses on incentivising citizens to participate in waste segregation rather than relying solely on awareness campaigns. The platform, available as a free mobile application, has already attracted around 30,000 users, reflecting growing public engagement.
Goodeebag operates on a simple system. Households segregate dry waste such as plastic, paper, metals and textiles, and schedule doorstep pickups without any minimum quantity requirement. The collected waste is then sorted into nearly 40 categories and directed toward recycling channels. Materials are either repurposed into products like tiles or supplied to industries for reuse, ensuring minimal landfill contribution.
What sets the startup apart is its reward-based model. Users earn points based on the quantity of waste they provide, which can later be redeemed for groceries, household essentials and eco-friendly products. With pickups typically completed within 72 hours and no additional charges, the service lowers barriers to participation while making sustainability financially attractive.
Beyond households, the initiative has extended into community engagement, including school drives where students are encouraged to contribute books in exchange for redeemable coupons.
The impact has been significant. The platform has facilitated over 17,000 waste pickups and processed nearly 90,000 kilograms of recyclable material. As Hyderabad grapples with increasing landfill pressure, Goodeebag is emerging as a grassroots solution, demonstrating that behavioural change—when incentivised—can play a critical role in addressing urban environmental challenges.
