Lucknow: A 19-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed to death by her father inside a police station in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district in an incident that has shocked the state. The accused, identified as Satyakumar Chauhan, has been arrested.
The victim, Shivani Chauhan, was reportedly in a relationship with a neighbouring youth. According to police, the couple left their homes on May 18 despite opposition from the woman’s family. Following their disappearance, Shivani’s family filed a kidnapping case against the young man.
Police recently traced the couple and brought them to the Badausa Police Station. Family members from both sides were called to the station as part of the proceedings.
The incident occurred while a counsellor was speaking with Shivani in a separate room at the police station. Investigators said her father allegedly produced a concealed sharp weapon and stabbed her multiple times in the abdomen. Police personnel intervened and rushed the injured woman to a hospital, but she later succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
The incident is being widely viewed as a suspected honour killing. Banda Superintendent of Police Palash Bansal said a case has been registered against the accused based on a complaint filed by Shivani’s mother. The weapon allegedly used in the attack has been recovered.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination and later handed over to the family for the last rites.
The killing has raised serious questions about the circumstances under which the attack was carried out inside a police station despite the presence of law enforcement personnel and ongoing counselling proceedings involving the victim and her family.
