New Delhi: Jamaat-e-Islami All India Secretary Rahmathunnisa said in a press conference that it is time for the celebrated Malayalam film actors to stand up and denounce violence against women. She said that this is not a problem that can be solved by the resignation of a few people and that it needs to be deeply evaluated and discussed with the public.
Following the Justice Hema Committee report and the landslide of allegations by multiple women in cinema against men in the Malayalam film industry, 17 executive committee members, as well as president superstar Mohanlal of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), resigned on Tuesday. Mohanlal said that it is their moral responsibility to resign.
Speaking at the Jamat’s press conference, Rahmathunnisa said that violence against women should not be seen as their problem but as a problem of society. In the context of increasing sexual violence in the country, the 'Jamaat-e Islami Hind Women’s Wing' will conduct a month-long nationwide awareness campaign. In the light of the revelations in Kerala, violence against women should be seen as a problem that men and women must face together.
She continued that it should be understood how the mentality of violence against women is growing in society. There is no lack of law in the country. However, change can be difficult without a change in mindset, she said and asserted that even nursery children should learn from being victims of violence that violence against women will not be eradicated by modest dressing alone. She also pointed out the link between violence against women and alcoholism and drug use.
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind All India Secretary Shaista Rafat said that the survey report that 73 per cent of 10 to 17-year-olds are watching porn sites is an indication of how the mindset of society is changing harmfully.
