Gujarat man threatens suicide from atop water tank, falls to death

Vadodara: A man who threatened to kill himself slips down to death in Gujarat’s Chhota Udepur district Wednesday afternoon.

The accident occurred when he was climbing down from 50-foot-tall water tank after fire brigade talked him out of suicide attempt.

The resident of Chhota Udepur town climbed up the water tank and began threatening to jump, recreating a well-known scene from Hindi film Sholay.

The Chhota Udepur fire department received emergency calls at 1.20 pm about a man ‘threatening suicide for unknown reasons’.

The fire department and the local police reached the spot and tried to counsel the man atop the water tank at Kawant Naka.

The man agreed to descend after ‘much effort and convincing’ when he slipped on the metal ladder of the water tank.

He managed only a couple of steps when he lost balance, falling on the ground, officials reportedly said.

Due to severe injuries the man fell unconscious and was taken to hospital where he succumbed to injuries.

Chhota Udepur Fire Station Officer Yuvrajsinh Gohil said, ‘His reason for taking the extreme step was not clear… We tried to convince him to come down and talk for a resolution, whatever the matter was. He was reluctant at first but agreed after some convincing.’

Police are seeking more details including the motive behind the alleged suicide attempt.
