The recovery of Pakistan-manufactured cartridges from the scene of recent violence in Uttar Pradesh's Sambhal has intensified political and security discussions in the state.
The violence, which erupted on November 24 in the Sambhal Kotwali area during a survey, resulted in five fatalities.
Police investigations revealed six bullets at the site, two of which were reportedly made in Pakistan. The finding has raised suspicions of potential terrorist involvement, prompting an in-depth probe.
Ziaur Rahman Barq, Samajwadi Party (SP) MP from Sambhal, criticized the local police for their handling of the case, calling for the dismissal of the officers involved. He questioned the delayed discovery of the cartridges and accused law enforcement of failing to prove that weapons were used during the incident.
“It’s shocking that these officers are entrusted with such a sensitive case. Their incompetence could harm the nation, and they should be removed immediately,” Barq said.
In contrast, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak defended the administration, assuring a fair and impartial investigation. Pathak urged political parties to maintain peace and cooperate with authorities.
“The presence of Pakistani cartridges is a grave issue, and our government is dedicated to uncovering the truth and taking strict action against the guilty. The investigation is thorough, and Section 144 remains in effect to uphold law and order,” Pathak stated.
A Special Investigation Team (SIT), supported by forensic experts and the Local Intelligence Unit (LIU), has been actively examining the affected areas. Sambhal Superintendent of Police Krishna Kumar Bishnoi revealed that a forensic team, using metal detectors, recovered additional ammunition at the site, including a 'POF 9MM 68-26' cartridge believed to be from Pakistan and a 'Winchester Made-in-USA 12-bore' cartridge.
“These findings highlight the seriousness of the case. We are investigating all angles, including possible external influences, to identify those responsible for the violence,” Bishnoi said.
As investigations continue, municipal teams have resumed cleanup operations in the violence-affected areas. The government has reiterated its commitment to delivering justice for the victims while ensuring those responsible are held accountable.
