New Delhi: BJP MLA Neelam Pahalwan on Thursday proposed renaming southwest Delhi's Najafgarh as ‘Nahargarh,’ alleging that the Mughals had altered its original name.

Speaking in the Delhi Assembly, Pahalwan, who recently won from Najafgarh by defeating AAP’s Tarun Kumar by over 29,000 votes, claimed that efforts to rename the area had been ongoing for years.

"Najafgarh faced numerous challenges under Mughal rule during the reign of Alam II. During the 1857 revolt, Raja Nahar Singh fought and integrated the region into Delhi’s territory. We have long been striving to restore its name to Nahargarh. The people of my constituency have high expectations that this Assembly will support our efforts," she said.

The push for renaming areas appears to be gaining traction among BJP leaders in Delhi. After securing victory in Mustafabad, senior BJP leader Mohan Singh Bisht announced his intent to propose renaming the constituency as either ‘Shiv Puri’ or ‘Shiv Vihar’ after formally assuming office.

The first session of the eighth Delhi Assembly is currently underway following the BJP’s landslide victory in the February 5 elections, which ended AAP’s decade-long rule. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP was reduced to 22. The Congress failed to win any seats.
