Dehradun: The Dehradun police have summoned the private firm that prepared the NARI 2025 report on women’s safety released by the National Commission for Women (NCW), for failing to ‘provide any satisfactory answers during the police inquiry’, Indian Express reported.
The action comes days after the Uttarakhand government dismissed the report by P-Value Analytics Company.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Singh summoned the company’s managing director and team involved in data collection and analysis to appear with all documents related to the survey in a week.
‘If the company fails to give satisfactory answers or if evidence is found that the report was prepared on baseless facts, strict legal action will be taken,’ SSP Singh was quoted as saying.
The National Annual Report on Women’s Safety – NARI 2025 found Dehradun to be one of the top 10 unsafe cities for women in the country.
The report was released on August 28 in the presence of its chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar.
Just as the BJP administration in Uttarakhand termed the report ‘not based on facts’, the trade associations and educational institutions in Dehradun lodged complaints demanding action against the report, according to police.
Mayank Dhayya, a representative of the firm, is reported to have told the SSP when summoned that the survey was done as part of an academic research for university students.
Dhayya added that of the two separate teams of the company involved in the work one collected the data via survey work, while the other analyzed the data.
However, the SSP reportedly said that the representative had not provided any satisfactory answers regarding the basis of the survey report or other questions.
The National Crime Records Bureau data of 2022 said there was no rape-murder cases in Dehradun but there were 8 dowry deaths, 13 abetment of suicide and 184 rape cases.
A total of 1,205 cases of crimes against women was recorded, which stood at 27% of the total 4,337 cases in the state.
However, in 2021 Dehradun reported zero rape-murder cases but there were 10 dowry deaths, cruelty at the hands of husbands or relatives were at 132 alongside 113 rape cases.
It is reported that the total number of crimes against women out of total 3,431 cases was 756 meaning 22% of the total crimes in the state.
However, the national capital Delhi reported 14,277 cases of crimes against women entering the NARI report as one of the least safe cities for women.
