Congress MLAs protest in MP Assembly with tea kettles, liquor garland

Bhopal: The Opposition Congress in Madhya Pradesh intensified its protest against the BJP government during the third day of the winter session at the state Assembly on Wednesday. Congress MLAs arrived at the Assembly carrying tea kettles and a garland of liquor bottles to highlight alleged failures in governance and unfulfilled promises.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) Umang Singhar explained that the tea kettles were meant to symbolize the struggles of unemployed youth in Madhya Pradesh, whom he alleged were being forced to open tea stalls due to the BJP government’s inability to create jobs. He emphasized that the BJP had promised to generate two lakh jobs annually but failed to meet this commitment.

Congress MLA Mahesh Parmar from the Tarana constituency in Ujjain arrived at the Assembly wearing a garland made of liquor bottles. Security personnel prevented him from entering the House until the garland was removed. Parmar clarified that his action was aimed at drawing attention to an alleged Rs 5,000 crore liquor scam, linked to irregularities in the state’s liquor policy.

Minister Vishwas Sarang criticized the Congress protests, particularly the demonstration involving liquor bottles, and stated that he would discuss the issue with the Speaker to consider action against the Congress MLAs involved.

Meanwhile, Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar continued discussions on the supplementary budget presented a day earlier. Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Jagdish Devda had introduced the first supplementary budget for the fiscal year, amounting to Rs 22,460 crore, with Rs 13,130 crore allocated under the revenue head and Rs 9,329 crore under the capital head. The budget aims to fund several developmental initiatives across various departments.

The protests by Congress MLAs reflect their dissatisfaction with the BJP government over governance, employment promises, and alleged corruption.
