Cleaned river alone: Madhya Pradesh youth gets Dutch CEO’s job offer

Bhopal: A 20-year-old man from Madhya Pradesh who won widespread appreciation after single-handedly cleaning a heavily polluted river for two months has received a job offer from Dutch entrepreneur and environmentalist Boyan Slat.

Surendra Singh Chaudhary, popularly known as Bittu Tabahi, has been invited to join The Ocean Cleanup, the global organisation founded by Slat to tackle plastic pollution in oceans and rivers.

Surendra took on the task of cleaning the Ajnar River on his own, spending his personal money to purchase the equipment and materials needed for the work. Every day, he removed plastic waste and other garbage that had accumulated in the polluted waterway.

What made the effort particularly striking was that he carried it out without financial or logistical support from environmental organisations or other individuals. He also documented his work on Instagram, sharing photographs showing the river before and after the cleanup.

The dramatic transformation attracted considerable online attention, with images of the cleaned river eventually going viral on X. Surendra’s story was shared alongside the photographs, bringing it to Slat's attention.

The Ocean Cleanup founder responded directly to the viral post, inviting the young environmental enthusiast to work with his organisation.

The unexpected offer has brought national attention to Surendra’s remarkable initiative, which began as an individual effort to restore a polluted local waterway. His work has also highlighted how determined individuals can take on environmental problems despite having little institutional support.

From cleaning a neglected river with his own resources to receiving an international job opportunity, Surendra’s journey has turned an ordinary local cleanup effort into an inspiring environmental success story.
