Cockroach Janta Party swarms Jantar Mantar demanding Education Minister's resignation

New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party, a satirical movement turned youth political front, staged a massive protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Saturday to demand the immediate resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over recent competitive examination-related lapses and mismanagement.

The demonstration gained momentum following the arrival of the campaign’s founder, Abhijeet Dipke, who flew into the national capital from the United States to lead the agitation. Addressing the gathered crowd, Dipke stated that the sole objective of the protest was to force Pradhan out of office. He accused the government of shamelessness, claiming that instead of addressing examination scams, authorities focused on hacking the group's social media accounts and deleting their posts. Dipke warned that if Pradhan did not resign by 5 PM on Saturday, nationwide protests would be launched.

During his speech to the demonstrators, Dipke sharply criticized the ruling dispensation for using communal polarization as a distraction from systemic failures. He argued that for the past decade, the government has kept the youth trapped in Hindu-Muslim politics, asking the crowd if such divisive rhetoric had ever generated actual employment for anyone in the country. He emphasized that the Cockroach Janta Party was not a pre-planned political entity but rather a spontaneous manifestation of student outrage. Highlighting the climate of fear surrounding dissent, Dipke shared that his own mother was terrified he would be jailed for speaking out, a fear he claimed is shared by every mother in India when their child challenges the status quo.

The protest drew high-profile support, including participation from prominent Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk. Ahead of the event, Delhi Police had deployed over 1,000 personnel across the capital, initially claiming they had received no official protest request from the group. However, permission was eventually granted for the gathering to proceed until 5 PM. Security was also tightened at Dipke’s family residence in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. While the student demonstration remained the focus, local authorities detained several counter-protesters who arrived at the site to shout slogans against the Cockroach Janta Party.

The Cockroach Janta Party, which brands itself as a "political front of the youth, by the youth, for the youth," has experienced an unprecedented meteoric rise, amassing over 22 million followers on Instagram. The movement was sparked on May 16 as a direct response to controversial remarks by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, who allegedly compared certain unemployed youth and activists to "cockroaches" and "parasites" during a Supreme Court hearing. Although Chief Justice Kant later issued a clarification stating he was misquoted by the media and was only targeting individuals entering the legal profession with fake degrees, the statement ignited a massive youth rebellion that has now transitioned from digital satire into a formidable physical street protest.
