Chennai: The Confederation of Farmers Associations from Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery Delta districts on Saturday announced that they will hold a bandh on October 11 to protest against Karnataka for not releasing Cauvery water.

In a meeting, the farmers said that they would conduct protests in front of Central government offices on that day, along the districts of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Myladuthurai, Ariyalur, and Cuddalore.

DMK farmers' organisation will also join the protest against the bias of the Karnataka side, said DMK farmers' wing leader, AKS Vijayan.

Vijayan said that the water from Mettur dam was released on the customary date of June 12 for delta irrigation and farmers took up Kuruvai cultivation with the expectations of adequate water.

However, the Karnataka side did not release water, which led to the withering of crops, he said, adding that around 2 lakh acres of kuruvai paddy cultivation had withered.

He further said that the Karnataka BJP and Kannada organisations have organised strikes twice against Tamil Nadu despite having 80 percent storage of water.
