Kolkata: Five bodies were reported to have arrived at the medical college and hospital's mortuary on January 5 for an autopsy. Prior to that, Dr Sandip Ghosh, the principal, received a request from the ENT division for five bodies to be used at an endoscopic sinus surgery workshop.
Dr Ghosh forwarded the request to the medical college's department of forensic medicine as a result. The five bodies that were brought in for the autopsy were allegedly transported to the workshop where dissections were performed for practical instruction.
After the workshop, those bodies were again sent back to the hospital morgue after which the autopsy was conducted.
However, the development has created controversy as legal brains point out that using bodies coming for an autopsy cannot be used for other practical purposes without the prior permission of the court, police and more importantly, the family members of the victims. As per norms in such cases, the autopsy report should mention that endoscopic surgery was conducted before the post-mortem examination.
However, the family members of two such victims have alleged that the authorities concerned did not take any permission from them for that. Dr Ghosh told media persons that an internal enquiry into the matter will be done.
