Andhra Pradesh renames key schemes, restores NTR and Chandraanna legacy

Amaravati: The TDP-led government in Andhra Pradesh has gone on a spree of renaming government schemes and institutions. The notable changes include renaming Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences in Vijayawada back to NTR University of Health Sciences, reflecting the new administration's preference for honoring NTR and Chandraanna over YSR and Jagananna.

The Dr. YSR University of Health Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was passed in the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, reinstating the original name of the institution founded by NT Rama Rao in 1986. Health Minister Y. Satya Kumar, supported by TDP and its allies, moved the Bill. The YSRCP, which had renamed the university after YSR in 2022, was absent during the vote.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, shortly after assuming office, signed directives to restore names of several schemes, including NTR Bharosa and Anna Canteens, which had been changed by the previous YSRCP government. Other schemes have also reverted to their previous names, undoing changes made during YSRCP's tenure.

This renaming initiative underscores the ongoing political tussle between the TDP and YSRCP, with each party seeking to imprint its legacy on state welfare programs.
