Cyclone Arnab kills 7 in Andhra Pradesh, causes Rs 4,600 crore damage

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh has reported seven deaths and preliminary losses of Rs 4,600 crore following Cyclone Arnab, with the state government warning that the damage assessment could rise as inspections continue.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu announced the figures on Thursday after surveying affected areas and visiting relief centres in Konaseema district. He said a preliminary damage report had been submitted to the Centre after discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Central assessment teams are expected to arrive in the state on Friday.

The government has begun relief and restoration operations in the worst-hit areas, including Konaseema and West Godavari districts. Around 8,000 electricity poles have fallen in Konaseema alone, while fallen trees have been cleared to reopen roads. The state has sought 1,000 electricity personnel from Telangana to speed up repairs, with additional teams from neighbouring states possible if required.

Naidu announced compensation of Rs 1,500 for each damaged coconut and oil palm tree. Families returning from relief camps will receive 25 kg of rice, essential supplies and financial assistance for immediate needs.

Farmers affected by crop losses will receive compensation after assessments, with eligible payments to be transferred directly to their bank accounts.

The Chief Minister said about 30,000 officials had been deployed for relief work and credited advance preparations with limiting casualties despite the extensive damage.
