New Delhi: Challenging the BJP leaders to follow, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders launched their fresh "show your degree" campaign. AAP MLA and Delhi Education Minister Atishi announced the campaign after the Gujarat High Court imposed a Rs 25,000 fine on AAP leader and Delhi Chief Minister Aravind Kejriwal after he demanded details of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's degrees, NDTV reported.
Atishi told reporters on Sunday that they are starting a campaign, saying, "Your leaders will show their degree every day to you. I have a BA degree from Delhi University and two Master's degrees from Oxford. All of them are original," NDTV quoted. She said that she wanted to ask all leaders to show there degree certificates, particularly BJP leaders.
After Kejriwal's Right to Information (RTI) request, it was on 2016, then Central Information Commission M Sridhar Acharyulu directed Prime Minister's Office, Gujarat University and Delhi University to give details about PM Modi's graduation and postgraduation degrees.
Then the Gujarat University immediately put up a degree certificate on their website claiming to be belonging to Modi.
The ruling BJP shared its copies claiming that Modi has a bachelor's degree from Delhi University and a Master's in Political Science from Gujarat University.
When the government's lawyer Tushar Mehta argued at the Gujarat HC that it wouldn't make a difference in a democracy if a person holding an office is a doctorate or illiterate, Kejriwal's lawyer countered that election nomination forms listed educational qualifications and it was a legitimate thing to ask.
Mehta argued that there is no public interest involved in the said demand for Modi's degree details. Kejriwal's side countered that they were not asking for Modi's mark sheet but a degree certificate.
