Canadian popstar Shawn Mendes on Friday announced a new single and it appears that he used New York City’s orange sky as the song’s artwork. However, netizens are not happy about it.
The American city has been experiencing poor air quality due to the smoke from wildfires in Canada. This has led to the sky appearing orange and has raised alarms about the climate crisis. The singer using this as an inspiration for his song does not seem right to some people on the internet.
The song is titled 'What the hell are we dying for?"
"Started writing this song yesterday morning with my friends in upstate New York & finished it only a few hours ago..felt so important to me to share with you guys in real-time," he tweeted yesterday.
Some people criticised him for just using a photo of the city and adding the text to it. Others slammed him for using the image of New York City instead of his home country Canada. Some people also accused him of using a crisis to promote his song.
However, many people are supportive of the announcement. Shawn has always been vocal about climate change and shared the link to the Canadian Red Cross.
The 24-year-old took a break from the music industry in July 2022 and cancelled his Wonder Tour to take care of his mental health.
