Mumbai: Iconic playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at 92 in Mumbai on Sunday. Admitted to Breach Candy Hospital on Saturday for extreme exhaustion and a chest infection, her death was confirmed by Maharashtra Culture Minister Ashish Shelar outside the facility. Last rites will be at Shivaji Park crematorium on Monday at 4:00 pm.
Her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle had shared on Instagram: “My grandmother, Asha Bhosle due to extreme exhaustion and suffering a chest infection has been admitted to hospital and we request you to value our privacy. Treatment is ongoing and hopefully everything will be well and we shall update you positively”.
Debuting with the 1943 Marathi film Majha Bal, Bhosle recorded nearly 12,000 songs across Hindi and 20 other Indian and foreign languages. Hits like Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko, Do Lafzon Ki Hai Dil Ki Kahani, Kya Ghazab Karte Ho Ji, O Haseena Zulfonwali, and Yeh Ladka Hai Allah Kaisa Hai Deewana defined her legacy.
She collaborated with legends including Shankar-Jaikishan, RD Burman, OP Nayyar, Ilaiyaraaja, Bappi Lahiri, and AR Rahman. Honours include the 2000 Dadasaheb Phalke Award and 2008 Padma Vibhushan.
