Kartik Aaryan says it is necessary to have constructive discussions about managing film budgets.
Alongside director Kabir Khan, Aaryan believes that the ongoing debate over rising star fees and overhead costs is crucial and timely.
In light of recent box office failures of major films, there's increasing concern within the Hindi film industry about the high remuneration demanded by top stars and the additional costs associated with their entourages. Aaryan asserted that a film's financial equation must be balanced for the benefit of everyone involved.
"A film generates income from various rights after its release. If the combined star and project value results in profit, the financials work out. If not, it's essential to consider taking a pay cut. It's all about having a healthy discussion," Aaryan shared in an interview with PTI.
Director Kabir Khan, known for his blockbuster hits like "Ek Tha Tiger" and "Bajrangi Bhaijaan," notes that the pandemic has significantly altered the industry dynamics, prompting this important discussion. "The audience's viewing habits changed post-COVID, reducing theater attendance. This led to a debate on other revenue avenues, like OTT platforms. Whenever the industry faces financial challenges, budget control becomes a priority," Khan explained to PTI.
Aaryan agrees with Khan's perspective, stressing that the financial aspects of a film must always add up. Khan further highlights the need for industry consensus on budget management without compromising on film quality. "No one wants to reduce spending on the screen elements. The focus is on the significant portion of the budget allocated to star fees. Stars and actors are now more willing to adjust their fees to match the scale of the film," Khan added.
Aaryan, who has starred in successful films like "Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2" and "Satyaprem Ki Katha," believes that all industry stakeholders are ready to support a more balanced financial approach. "Actors, directors, and producers are all on board with finding a way to benefit everyone. Post-COVID, audiences are more selective about theatrical releases, and with multiple content platforms available, we need to be smart about our approach," he said.
The duo's upcoming film, "Chandu Champion," which tells the story of India's first Paralympic gold medalist Murlikant Petkar, reflects their commitment to quality storytelling within a controlled budget. The film, produced by Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and Kabir Khan Films, will be released on June 14.
