The Malayalam mystery thriller Eko̅ wrapped up its opening weekend on a strong note, showing a steady rise in collections since its release on November 21.
Directed by Dinjith Ayyathan and written by Bahul Ramesh, the film appears to have struck a chord with audiences looking for atmospheric thrillers rooted in local lore.
According to early estimates from box office tracker Sacnilk, Eko̅ has earned approximately ₹5.8 crore (India net) in its first three days.
After a modest opening of ₹0.8 crore on Friday, the film witnessed an impressive surge on Saturday, collecting ₹1.85 crore, a jump of over 130%. The upward momentum continued on Sunday, when the film notched its highest single-day earnings of ₹3.15 crore, substantially boosting its weekend total.
With the film entering its first Monday today – traditionally a crucial test for any new release – industry analysts are watching closely to gauge whether Eko̅ can maintain its strong momentum into the weekdays.
Set against the misty hills of Kaattukunnu, Eko̅ follows the intertwined lives of Mlaathi Chedathi and Peeyoos as they grapple with challenges linked to the shadowy legacy of Kuriyachan – a figure remembered variously as an entrepreneur, outlaw, and local legend.
The film blends elements of folklore, survival drama, and moral ambiguity, echoing the thematic signatures previously seen in the director-writer duo’s earlier works.
Eko̅ serves as the concluding instalment in Bahul Ramesh’s “Animal Trilogy,” which includes Kishkindha Kaandam and Kerala Crime Files: Season 2. Although standalone in their plots, the films share a common thread: an exploration of human behaviour and crime through narratives where nature and animals function as symbolic forces.
Produced by Aaradyaa Studios – marking its maiden venture under MRK Jhayaram – the film boasts a strong ensemble cast featuring Vineeth, Narain, Binu Pappu, Ashokan, and Biana Momin, in addition to lead actor Sandeep Pradeep.
How Eko̅ performs during the weekdays will be key in determining its long-term box-office prospects. For now, the film’s strong weekend has positioned it as a promising movie to watch in the coming weeks.
